In fact, her tutor is a nice lad in half a hockey mask who lives under the floorboards. We are at the Opéra, where everything and, if possible, everybody that can be gilded with gold has received the necessary treatment. The bulk of it takes place in 1870, in Paris-ah, Paris, so overwhelming in its impact that while some of its blessed citizens remember to speak English with a French accent, others do not.

The plot is impressively free of anything that does not smell of unpasteurized melodrama. Eliot by having grown men prance around wearing jerkins knitted from tabbies: what flash of fate brought these two together to merge into a seamless whole? The title of their shared project, which Schumacher directed, is not “The Phantom of the Opera” but “Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera,” which, if misheard, might lead viewers to suppose that they could corner the Phantom, peel off his disguise, and reveal the features of none other than His Lordship. It couldn’t be any better, really, could it? The pairing of the tasteful genius behind “Batman & Robin” and the English peer who paid homage to T. And so it came about, this week, that I gazed at a black screen and saw words so calamitous that they might have been written in my own blood: “Screenplay by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Joel Schumacher.” Just occasionally, something slips through-a thin shudder of monstrosity, enough to remind us of what it means to be afraid.

It is unfortunate for musicals that there was such a rush to catch up with Chicago because you get musicals like this that feel more harmful to the genre than beneficial.What does it take to shake a movie fan? Whether we are critics or bug-eyed buffs, so many of our evenings are spent in the company of crimes and misdemeanors that we can hardly be blamed for developing the hide of a pachyderm. Fans of musicals probably will enjoy it due to the lack of musicals in modern day, but those who are on the fence about musicals probably won’t be won over by this film. The musical is marginally good, and this is a very bland adaptation of it. The Phantom of the Opera isn’t a very good movie. The stylized beginning and endings of the film try too hard and come off as a Tim Burton rip-off. The film is brash and big looking, but it lacks feeling and is somewhat cold. After Chicago won Best Picture, the musical came back in vogue and people were scrambling for material.
The movie does have some nice looks and does sound good. Other stars in the movies like Miranda Richardson and Ciarán Hinds could have also had more screen time to break up the melodrama.

Minnie Driver is wasted as the uppity star Carlotta. Gerard Butler, Emmy Rossum, and Patrick Wilson are all a bit over-the-top and doing stage acting in the film, leading to very wooden performances. The acting for the movie isn’t very good either.
The film was nominated for Academy Awards for Best Achievement in Cinematography, Best Achievement in Art Direction, and Best Original Song (“Learn to be Lonely”). The movie was met with a big box office draw but mixed reviews from critics.

The building is allegedly haunted by the Phantom (Gerard Butler) who refuses to allow the productions to go on in any way but the way he demands. The Paris Opera House is under new ownership but facing a problem. Phantom that this is a really weird first date.
